The diagram above comes via the 5th NY Regt. I add this because I often see folks at Rev War events using 17th or 19th century pipes.

Makers marks are something of which I was not aware. Even on a plain pipe, they can be added by hand with a Dremel tool. An excellent collection of makers marks can be found at The Museum of London.
